Bible Study

- Catholics and the Bible

Father Ray Lelii, S.J. *

“In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, ‘but as what it really is, the word of God.

In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet his children, and talks with them.’" Catechism of the Catholic Church, 104

The Church constantly encourages Catholics to read and meditate upon the Sacred Scriptures as a foundational element of prayer.

Tips for studying the Bible:
- Contact our group and join 202-561-4178
- Don’t be afraid to pick up a Bible and read it!
- Ask the Holy Spirit to bless your reading and then just read, slowly and thoughtfully
- Start by reading next Sunday’s Gospel
- Try starting with the Gospel of Mark, then the Book of Acts.
- Use the Liturgy of the Hours, or parts of it, for your personal prayer

Knights of St. Jerome

The Knights of St. Jerome is the oldest Catholic fraternal organization in the Archdiocese of Washington. Founded by the Jesuit Fathers in St. Mary's County around the year 1874 as the St. Inigoes Beneficial Society, the organization was reorganized as the Knights of St. Jerome on March 1, 1880.

Membership is open to all Catholics, 16 years of age or older, without regard to race or gender.

The Knights of St. Jerome contributes to scholarships, Christmas in April and other charitable causes. Members work for the benefit of the church, the community, and other members.

The Knights of St. Jerome Hall was the site of the first school for black children in St. Mary's County

Lectors

Mrs. Helena Haley

Lectors serve the Church by helping to proclaim the Scriptures in our Sunday Masses. For each day's first and second readings . Most people in a Sunday Mass hear the word of God only in that formal setting. Their only regular exposure to Scripture is from the lips of the lector and the Pastor there. That offers the Lector a wonderful opportunity to help us gain the benefit of the Scripture's and lessons.
